Abstract

1465855 Hair dryers BRISTOL-MYERS CO 19 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 7506/74 Heading A5R A hand held hair dryer 10 comprises a tubular housing 12 having a cylindrical head 16 and a smaller diameter cylindrical handle 14 joined at a neck 18, air being drawn' into the housing through a first plurality of inlet openings 60 in neck 18 and a second plurality of inlet openings 62 in an end cap 50 by axial fans 64, 66 respectively, the fans being mounted on a common drive shaft 48 and having opposite pitches so that the incoming air streams are forced towards each other and over a heating element 58 carried on mica supports 56 between inlet openings 60, 62, the air being expelled perpendicularly to the axis of housing 12 through an outlet opening 63 comprising a longitudinally extending slot or slots disposed between the inlet openings 60, 62. The drive shaft 48 is driven by an electric motor 36 held within housing 12 by adaptors 32, 34 and. O-rings 38, 40, adaptor 32 having an arcuate periphery to channel air from inlet openings 60 towards outlet opening 63, the. motor being supplied with electrical current from a rectifier 42. Shaft 48 is journalled in bearings 52 and 54 in adaptor 32 and in end cap 50 respectively, and is connected to motor 36 by a flexible coupling 46. An end cap 30 mounted on a cylindrical extension 22 of handle 14 is rotatable to operate a switching circuit 24, which provides various modes of operation of the dryer, which modes are visually indicated by indicia on extension 22 moving into alignment with an indexing mark on end cap 30. A pair of baffles 84 symmetrically formed in head 16 may be provided to aid deflection of the air streams through the outlet opening 63. A brush, comb or nozzle for styling the hair may be mounted in alignment with the opening 63.
