Abstract
1465836 Refractory linings in hollow articles USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS INC 6 Feb 1974 [15 Feb 1973] 5504/74 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B3 and F4] A symmetric hollow metal article e.g. a cylinder or tube of Ni, Cr, bronze, brass, iron, steel, stainless steel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum, tin and aluminium, is lined with an abrasion resistant, refractory material, e.g. a layer of metal, such as Fe, overlaid by a layer of slag such as alumina or magnesia, by introducing an exothermic reaction mixture comprising a powered fuel metal and a reducible metal oxide powder into the article, igniting the mixture and rotating the article to separate the metal and slag layers. Suitable fuel metals include aluminium, magnesium, silicon and calcium-silicon alloys and reducible metal oxides include Fe 2 O 3 or Fe 3 O 4 . When a cylinder is lined by this method, the cylinder is fittted at each end with a melt retaining member and the inside wall is covered with an exothermic reaction mixture comprising a thick slurry or paste of a fuel metal powder, a reducible metallic oxide powder and a suitable liquid vehicle or binder and evaporating the liquid vehicle if present. Suitable binders include resinates of metals, asphalts, polyvinyl chloride, ethyl celulose, plastics and waxes.
