Abstract
1465435 Cobalt recovery SUMITOMO METAL MINING CO Ltd and S NAKABE 28 Jan 1975 [13 Feb 1974] 3732/75 Heading C1A Cobalt is recovered from cobaltiferous material rich in iron in a process comprising reduction smelting to reduce the oxidized cobalt to metallic cobalt which is then extracted as an alloy from which the sulphates of iron and cobalt are obtained by treating with aqueous copper sulphate solution, the resulting mixture is calcined to decompose the iron sulphate selectively into its oxide, the calcine is leached with an aqueous medium to extract the cobalt as its sulphate, the iron remaining as the residue. The alloy may be extracted undissolved or dissolved in a copper matte. Preferred reducing agents are iron, carbon, calcium carbide and ferrosilicon. The cobaltiferous material may also contain copper and nickel which may be left in the insoluble residue formed by the treatment with copper sulphate.
