Abstract

1465404 Auxiliary plant for steam turbines HICK HARGREAVES & CO Ltd 30 Dec 1974 [30 Jan 1974] 4236/74 Heading FIT The invention relates to steam turbine plant of a turbogenerator in which the air suction pump associated with the condenser may be adapted to supply cooling air to the turbine so as to ensure more rapid cooling of the turbine when the latter is to be taken out of service. In the Fig. a main 2 is provided with suction valves 1 by which the condenser may be connected to the main and with air discharge valves 1 A by which the main may be connected to the turbine for supply of cooling air thereto. An air pump 15 of the Rootes blower type and driven by a motor 16 is provided. In normal operation, the valve 1 is open and valve 1A is closed, the pump 15 taking its suction from the main 2, and so from the condenser through the line which includes an atmospheric air operated ejector 5 which comprises an air inlet valve 6, a water mist spray inlet nozzle and valve 8, also a valve-controlled by-pass 7. The valves 3,4 and 11 are open and the valve 12 closed during this phase of operation, the pump discharging through silencers 18 and 22, the valve 20 being open. Thus a vacuum is built-up and maintained in the condenser. When the turbine is to be shut-down and taken out of service, the valve 1 is closed and valve 1A opened. The valves 3 and 11 are closed and valve 12 opened; valve 20 is closed and valve 24 is opened. The air pump or blower 15 now takes in atmospheric air through silencer 13 and discharges it at increased pressure through the silencer 18, thence through the aftercooler 23 and open valve 24 to the main 2 from which the cool air passes through open valve 1A into the turbine for cooling thereof. The aftercooler is cooled by water from the header tank 25.
