Abstract

1465362 Plugs; plug valves INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 7 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 05607/74 Heading B8T [Also in Division A5] Apparatus for obtaining an uncontaminated urine sample from a patient, comprises a collection vessel 10 having an open top, a rigid plastics cap 12 positioned around said open top and having an aperture 24 therethrough and through which extends a catheter 14 having an open distal end 38 in vessel 10 and a proximal portion extending above the cap and provided with inlets 40, and a member 22 pivotably mounted in said cap and having a bore 34 therethrough for passage of the catheter when the member is vertical with its lower open end above aperture 24, the catheter being removable from the vessel by sliding through bore 34, and member 22 being pivotable to a horizontal position on removal of the catheter when an external surface 36 of said member blocks aperture 24 to seal the vessel, cap 20 being screwed on to said vessel. When collecting the urine sample, the cap is only loosely screwed on vessel 10 to allow for venting of air. Venting may also occur between bore 34 and the catheter. A yieldable flared portion 42 is provided adjacent the distal end of the catheter to prevent too easy removal of the catheter from vessel (60). In an alternative embodiment, an elastomeric tapered plug (76), Fig. 4 (not shown), seats in the distal end of the catheter and on pulling the catheter out of vessel (60), fits into aperture (68) to seal the vessel instead of a pivotal member 22 being provided A yieldable stop (74) is provided on the catheter adjacent discharge openings (72) therein. The cap (62) has ribs (63) spaced around its depending inner wall. During collection of a urine sample, the cap is positioned on vessel (60) with the ribs contacting an annular ridge (65) around the open top of the vessel to allow venting. After collection, the cap is pressed fully down on the vessel, as shown in Fig. 4, to provide a sealing contact therewith. The collection vessel may be a centrifuge tube.
