1465256 Welding by pressure VSES N I INST PO STROITELSTVU MAGISTRALNYKH TRUBOPROVODOV and ELEKTROSTAL LAVOD TYAZHELOGO MASHINOSTROE 10 June 1975 24775/75 Heading B3R A machine for resistance butt welding of pipes 3, 4 comprises a transformer 1 having leads 2 attachable to the pipes 3, 4, a manipulator 5 for aligning and moving the pipes during welding and which is to be disposed inside the pipes, the manipulator comprising a body 7, an aligning unit 8 movable relative to the body an an immovable aligning unit 9, electrically insulated and fixed to the body, both units 8, 9 having pipe holding and aligning clamps 16 which are actuated by hydraulic jacks having pistons 15, the movable unit 8 further having hydraulic jacks which include pistons 22 for moving the unit 8, and hence pipe 3, toward pipe 4, and a tubular member 6 fixed to the body 7 houses hydraulic control apparatus for the jacks in its upper half and acts as an hydraulic fluid reservoir in its lower half a longitudinal partition 24 dividing the tubular member 6. The hydraulic jacks for actuating the clamps 16 move corresponding conical members 18 mounted for axial movement and interacting with the clamps to move them radially. The tubular member 6 has pairs of wheels 30 for moving the manipulator 5 along the pipes. The machine may either be used in stationary form (as shown) or to weld pipes together into a continuous string (Fig. 2, not shown).
