Abstract

The material made from alumina and titanium carbide has a mean transverse breaking strength of at least 67.9 + 14.7 kg/mm<2>, a mean Rockwell A hardness of 93.8 and a mean Knoop hardness of 3477. It is produced by sintering a powder mixture of 70 % of alumina and 30 % of titanium carbide while the pressure is varied during the heating under specified conditions. The material can be used as refractory material and for the production of cutting tools for metals.
