Circular machines. - The stitchforming and fashioning cams of a wellknown type of latch-needle machine are modified for use in connexion with spring beard needles, chiefly in that the knitting wave, instead of beginning before the centre-line of the set of knitting-cams is reached, begins at a point f<1> which is well beyond the central position of the feeder m, so that the beards stand above the run of yarn before descending to the pressing position o. At h<1> the new loops are measured off over the tops of advanced web-holders and at d<1> the needles are drawn down to their stitch-forming limit, the web-holders having retired to release the measured loops. The knitting-cams comprise, in addition to the ordinary retracting cams c, stitch cams or points d and restoring cams k, a pair of swinging guard cams f, g which may be combined with or be separate from the narrowing picks and which replace the usual upper central V-shaped cam for guarding the upper corners of the cams c. Swinging arms 15 carrying, the members f, g are drawn normally downward by springs 16 into the position shown to the left of Fig. 9, resting on the top of the pick block. The needles, in passing in the direction of the arrow x, lift up the member g, and are deflected by the member f to the pressing position o. After continuing in an horizontal direction a short distance, they are passed down to the loopmeasuring position h', at which level they are retained bv the horizontal surface h until the stitch point d is reached. On reversal of the needlecylinder, the first needle of the heel and toe set to be lifted to inoperative position strikes the shoulder f<2> of the member f, or of a separate narrowing pick, and is thereby raised, while the remaining needles follow on below the member f as in usual narrowing practice, and are deflected by the member g. The stitch ring 13 is grooved vertically at 13<1> to support the needles against lateral displacement, the upper parts of the grooves being formed in the faces of the walls which lie between and guide the web-holders, while the lower parts extend across the solid portion of the stitch ring. The arrangement of pressing and associated mechanism described in Specification 146,451 is adopted.
