146,413. Optische Anstalt C. P. Goerz Akt.-Ges. Oct. 26, 1917, [Convention date]. Right to Patent relinquished. Periscopes. - The lightreceiving end of a submarine periscope having a variable magnification is kept small by the use of an axially adjustable lens system for varying the magnification. As shown, the periscope comprises a prism 2 in front of an opening 1 in the periscope tube, a stationary object glass 3, an axially adjustable lens 4, fixed lenses 5, 7, 8, 9, and a prismatic eye-piece 10. The lens 4 may be placed below the first image-plane 6, as shown, and form part of the erecting system, or moved near to the object glass 3, so as to be above the first image plane, the position of this plane being consequently altered and a different magnification resulting. The movement cf the lens 4 may be effected by means of a jointed rod moved by a rack and pinion at its lower end.
