Abstract

1464079 Measuring strain FOSTER WHEELER CORP 19 March 1975 11503/75 Heading G1M A workpiece 10, Fig. 1, to be strain tested or thermal load tested has grid lines scribed as shown on a polished area 10a of its surface so as to provide datum points 0, 0<SP>1</SP>. The workpiece in its unstrained condition is then covered by a transfer material which is tooled or pressed to give an image or imprint of the datum points. The workpiece is then strained under test and further images obtained on a second piece of transfer material. The before and after distances are then measured to determine the strain. In Fig. 3 a thin metal strip 12 with holes 14, 16 covered by stuck down indium pads 18, 20 is used to cover the datum points, and the pads are then burnished or rubbed to transfer the images of the points O.
