Abstract
1,4-Naphthoquinone is prepared by catalytic oxidation of naphthalene in the gaseous state by means of a gas containing molecular oxygen. The catalyst contains vanadium pentoxide or an Me oxide, in which Me is tungsten, titanium, zirconium, tantalum, caesium, molybdenum, chromium, niobium, nickel, aluminium, iron or silver, an alkali metal sulphate or iron sulphate and an alkali metal pyrosulphate on an inert support. Its activity and selectivity are increased by maintaining an equilibrium between the alkali metal sulphate and the alkali metal pyrosulphate. The proportions of these substances are kept constant by adding sulphur or a sulphur compound which is (are) capable of supplying the reaction system with sulphur trioxide to the starting material.
