Cutting-out apparatus. - A power press for cutting out or punching leather or other sheet material, of the type described in Specification 16488/04, has an upright presser-carrying pillar and a laterally swingable presser carried thereby and co-operating with a bed carried by the machined frame, the presser being arranged to swing in relation to the pillar, which is non- rotating, and not adjustable, but is given an upward and downward constant-throw reciprocating movement under hand or foot control. The bed is adjustable vertically. The presser comprises in one casting a head 15, an upper rotary bearing 19, a downward extension 20, and a lower rotary bearing 21, the upper bearing being confined between a shoulder 22 and a thrust bearing 23 on the pillar 18. The pillar 18 slides within guides constituted by bearings 27, 28 disposed on the frame of the machine and in relation to the bearings 19, 21 as on the Figure. Both up and down strokes of the pillar 18 are power driven, a block 34 secured in the foot of the pillar by a transverse pin being coupled by a short connecting rod 35 to an eccentric on a shaft 31. This shaft is driven through a trip clutch from a pulley 30. The clutch, Fig. 4, comprises hardened shoulders 39 on the pulley engaged by a spring-pressed pivoted dog 46 in a collar carried by the shaft 31 and controlled by means of a shoe 49 adapted to engage a pin 48 projecting from the dog, the shaft being stopped by means of a friction band and felt continuously acting upon the collar. The sleeve 49 is pivoted upon a fixed lug 52 and its operative position maintained by an adjusting screw 56 and spring 55, Fig. 1; it is actuated to free the dog 46 and start the machine by a handbar 64 or foot control 62 coupled together by rods 63 and to the shoe by levers 61, 59 and a rod 58. To permit the foot control to be moved out of the way, the levers 59, 61 are pivoted upon lugs 66 adjustable upon fixed frame bars 67. The bed 12 is carried by a cylindrical ram 69 adjustably supported in the frame by a screw 75 engaging a member 79 integral with or secured within the ram. This screw is operated by a hand-wheel 76 and has a collar 77 resting upon an apertured plate 78 confined within the lower end of the hollow frame. The frame is split and carries lugs 73 through which a screw 74 passes, whereby the bed may be clamped after adjustment.
