Abstract

1463948 Joint endoprostheses SULZER BROS Ltd 10 Nov 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 46386/75 Heading A5R In a joint endoprosthesis, such as a total hip-joint implant prosthesis, in which the surfaces of two parts of the prosthesis move on one another under load with a sliding and rubbing action, one of the two rubbing surfaces is made of a ceramic substance and the other of a plastics. The ceramic substance preferably has a density of more than 3.96 g/cm<3>, a grain size of less than 10Ám, a porosity of less than 0.5% and a Vickers hardness of 600 to 3500 kp/mm<2> and the ceramic surface preferably has an arithmetical mean roughness of less than 1 Ám. Suitable ceramic substances are Al2O3' TiO2, Cr2O3' Si3N4, SiC and B,C, the first of these being particularly suitable. The plastics material is preferably a fluorine-free thermoplastics, high-density or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene being particularly suitable.
