Abstract

1463766 Masterbatch for PVC compositions G EMERY 8 March 1974 [8 March 1973 (2)] 10525/74 Heading C3P A masterbatch, for subsequent admixture with powdered P.V.C. or a copolymer thereof, is prepared by mixing, in a heated mixer, one or more powdered resins and the required liquid additives until the additives are absorbed by the resins, the resin(s) being P.V.C., a copolymer thereof, or an additional resin selected from impact modifiers, barrier resins, process-aid resins or a solubilizing resin, and pouring the powdered product into a cold mixer and mixing it with the required solid additives and any additional resins not added in the heated mixer, thereby dissipating the heat and forming a powdered masterbatch, the weight of any P.V.C. (or copolymer thereof) added in the heated mixture being less than the weight of any additional resins added in the cold mixer. In an example, 3-6 parts (by weight) of P.V.C. are mixed with 0À5-5 parts of an epoxidized oil and 0À05-0À4 parts of a trinonylphenyl phosphite chelate of a Ca/Zn complex in a heated mixer, and the product then added to the cold mixer, in which have been cold mixed 5-15 parts of impact modifier (e.g. MABS, MBS or ABS resin), 0À05-5 parts of alphaphenylindole, 0-0À6 parts of phenylphenoxy-epoxypropane, 0À2-2 parts of lubricants based on C 18 alcohol and hydrogenized castor oil, 0À05-0À5 parts of glycerol trimontanate, 0À02-0À4 parts of a lubricant based on calcium montanate, 0À5-10 parts of process-aid resin, and 0-1 parts of colloidal silica. The powdered masterbatch may subsequently be mixed with the balance, to 100 parts, of the P.V.C.
