Abstract

1463743 Stabilizing weight BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 16 July 1975 [16 July 1974] 31529/74 Heading F2P A stabilizing weight for an underwater pipeline comprises a flexible skin enclosing a settable material and aggregates the proportions being such that when the settable material is in a set condition the mixture is bound together in a mass, the mixture being divided into layers by one or more partitions consisting of an inert flexible material extending therethrough to permit relative movement of adjacent layers of the mixture. Preferably the partitions are made up of two sheets of inert flexible material separated by less than 1/2 inch of settable material, also the partitions are substantially parallel. Each layer may contain a sheet of reinforcing mesh therein. Preferably the settable material is bitumen and the aggregate is an iron-containing ore. The mixture may also contain an anti-stripping agent and a plasticizer. The outer layer is canvas and the flexible material is sheets of bitumen roofing felt.
