Abstract

Compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which is optionally substituted by hydroxyl or alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R<2> denotes a straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms and A denotes a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic radical having at least one secondary or tertiary nitrogen atom are prepared, starting from the corresponding 4,5-halonaphthalimides, by replacement of the halogen in the alkaline range by OR<1> and the quaternisation of the compounds thus prepared. The products are eminently suitable as optical brighteners, in particular for anionically modified fibres.
