Abstract

1463421 Pipe cleaning apparatus DAICEL Ltd 24 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 17862/74 Heading F2N [Also in Divisions B1-B2] Tubular piping (12) of a fluid-flow system is cleaned internally by passing through it resilient compressible cleaning object or objects 1 propelled by fluid, the direction of which is reversed as necessary by a valve means (14), one or more cartridges 8 being connected to the piping for retaining the cleaning objects after their transit. A cartridge is attached to the piping at 9 and to the valve means at 2 and comprises a case 4 open at one end to receive the cleaning objects from the piping, closed at the other by a porous barrier 7, a passage 6 able to act as a fluid by-pass and a valve 3 in a tube 20 to control the fluid flow through the cartridge. The valve 3 is axially movable over a limited distance within the tube, movement being in response to fluid pressure on one of its end faces 10 and such that fluid flowing into the cartridge via opening 2 closes a hole 5 to the by-pass causing the fluid to pass through the case 4, ejecting any cleaning objects it contains, and fluid entering via 9 opens the hole 5 to enable the by-pass to be used, when for instance cleaning objects are present in the case 4. The piping may particularly be a tubular semi-permeable membrane used to purify water by reverse osmosis, the purified water being collected by a receiver (17) in which case the water may propel the cleaning objects or a cleaning fluid may be used. The cleaning objects are preferably sponge balls. Alternative forms of the valve 3 and barrier 7 are illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Automatic switching of the valve means (14) by a timer to reverse the fluid flow allows automatic cleaning of the system.
