Abstract

1463231 Bellows pumps VSES N I INST GORNOSPASATEL DELA 6 Feb 1975 5155/75 Heading F1N [Also in Divisions B1/2] Apparatus for cleaning a respiratory dust filter comprises a pair of concentric bellows 5, 6, connected by fixed lower wall 7 and vertically movable upper wall 8, which carries an adapter 24 and cover 23 between which is clamped the filter to be cleaned (not shown) with its dusty side down, and a solenoid 32 which is repeatedly activated (e.g. at 10-15 cycles/sec) to pump air through the filter and shake it, expelling the dust through the interior of the inner bellows to outlet 18. Each downstroke of the armature 33 compresses bellows 5, 6 via links 34-41, adapter 24 and wall 8, forcing air from space A between the bellows through valve or valves 31 into the cover 23 and thence down through the filter to outlet 18 and finally causing wall 8 to strike stop 42. De-activation of the solenoid allows spring 43 to lift wall 8, expanding the bellows to draw air into space A via valve 10 and inlet 14, expansion of the inner bellows 5 and non-return outlet valve 17 simultaneously creating suction within bellows 5 so that air still flows down through the filter. To test the filter after cleaning, the frequency of current supplied to the solenoid is doubled, which considerably reduces the stroke and the volumetric flowrate created by the bellows pump, to a rate similar to that of the human lungs. A differential pressure gauge 44, connected to adapter 24 and cover 23 above and below the filter, indicates the pressure drop across the filter. The clean filter may then be fitted into a respirator and the respirator similarly checked by pressing it against an adapter 15 on inlet pipe 14 and measuring the pressure difference across it with differential pressure gauge 45. Cover 23 and adapter 24 have cruciform ribs, mutually staggered, to support the filter, Figs. 2-4 (not shown). The apparatus in Fig. 5 (not shown) has an external flexible pipe (46) connecting space A with cover 23 in place of valve(s) 31.
