Abstract
1463165 Microbiological testing L BUCALO 7 Feb 1974 05662/74 Heading C6F [Also in Division A5] The presence of micro-organisms in a body cavity of a living being is indicated by introducing temporarily into the cavity a device 14, Fig. 2 comprising shells 20a, 20b joined together at flanges 22, the shells having apertures 24 through which any micro-organisms present in the cavity pass into the interior of the device which comprises a culture medium 16 retained by a body 18 of compressed filamentary material such as cotton fibres, fine gold wire, or plastics monofilaments. The body cavity may be the vagina, the mouth, the nose, an ear, a sinus passage, the anal canal, the urethra, or the uterus, and in the first case the culture medium may be used to test for gonorrhoea or vaginitis. Examples are given of various culture media. In a second embodiment Fig. 3 the filamentary material is retained within a frame comprising a network of intersecting ribs, the spaces between the ribs allowing passage therethrough of the micro-organisms. A number of the devices 14 may be incorporated into a tampon Fig. 5 (not shown). The culture medium may alternatively be composed of several sections having respectively different compositions for indicating the presence of different microorganisms.
