Abstract

1382098 Uterine devices COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 18099/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division H5] A radioactive source applicator for uterovaginal treatment includes a uterine probe 1 and two vaginal probes 2 and 3 in the form of flexible tubes into which radioactive sources may be introduced, the ends of probes 2 and 3 traversing respective cylindrical plugs 6, and all the probes being held fixed with respect to one another by a polyhedral block 4 having a central passage for probe 1 and a symmetrically disposed pair of oblique passages for probes 2 and 3, which block is slid over the probes after they have been suitably positioned. By choice of the face of the block 4 presented to the tubes 1, 2, and 3 when it is slid thereover, either a converging, Fig. 7, or diverging, Fig. 2, arrangement is produced, providing a choice of interprobe spacings. The plugs 6 have removable end-caps 7 to permit the insertion therein of heavy metal discs to act as radiation shields for the rectal and vesical walls, the axes of the plugs, and of part-cylindrical recesses 8 formed in the block 4 for the receipt of the plugs, being directed at an angle substantially equal to 100‹ with respect to the axes of probes 2 and 3, to facilitate retention in the vagina. The probes and the block 4 may be of polyethylene and expanded polystyrene, respectively.
