1463058 Beehives J LINDSAY 15 Feb 1974 [15 Feb 1973] 7459/73 Heading AIM A beehive has a brood chamber 11, opposite walls of which have recesses 14 receiving an adaptor 20-23 by means of which equipment, (i.e. brood frames and supers) which is not of the correct size for the brood chamber, may be supported. Thus British Standard frames can be fitted to a Dadant brood chamber by fitting an appropriate adaptor over the brood chamber, the lugs on the frame engaging the adaptor. A super 25 will then fit over the lugs of the frames and rest on the adaptor, with the interposition of a queen encluder 24. A mesh or perforated floor 17 is slidably engageable with the brood chamber and has a ridge 19 which closes the entrance recess 15 when the floor is in its innermost position when it is desired to move the hive. The floor may be partly withdrawn to form a flight board, or may be removed to permit unrestricted entry and exit of the bees. The supers may be formed with ribs 40, 41 having projecting ends with inclined surfaces 42a, 45a which engage the surrounding lift to prevent any displacement of the super within the lift. The hive may be provided with a flat or a pitched roof which may be secured to the uppermost lift by a locking bar and padlock, and the bar may be chained to the ground to discourage theft.
