Abstract

1462765 Valves H & D E WATTS Ltd 17 April 1975 [17 Jan 1974] 33897/73 Heading F2V A mixing valve has a primary control element 9 containing an arcuate slot 15 to select or mix flows from hot and cold inlets 2, 3 and a secondary control element 18 to regulate the total flow into an outlet 4. When the primary element is turned by a handle 30 the secondary element rotates with it, but when the latter is turned by a handle 35, the primary element is held against rotation by frictional engagement with elastomeric seals 5, 6 which may be spring- loaded. The member 9 is in screw-threaded engagement with a hollow spindle 10, and a pin 12 or adhesive is used to secure the screw threads; a further pin 31 limits angular rotation of the member 9. In modified constructions, the secondary element is screw-threaded for adjustment axially to regulate the volume of flow, may be rotated by a spanner and be locked in adjusted position by a nut (38), Fig. 4 (not shown), or may be integral with a cover (26), Fig. 5 (not shown), for the valve body. In a further modification, the primary element controls the volume and the secondary element the temperature, the elements having cooperating ports (20, 21), Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), in their cylindrical walls to adjust the ratio of hot to cold flow. The secondary element may also be designed to be pre-set by a screwdriver inserted into a slot (35), Fig. 8 (not shown). Fig. 12 shows a valve in which the ratio of hot and cold flows from inlets 2 (only one of which is shown) is varied by rotating a primary element 9 with a handle 30 while flow through an outlet 4 is adjusted by turning a handle 26 to displace the element 9 axially. In further embodiments a single lever (63), Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), is used to turn the primary element and to axially displace the secondary element.
