Abstract

1462627 Automatic regulation of power FERRANTI Ltd 25 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 35742/73 Heading G3X A system for controlling the power consumed by a load includes an arrangement for producing a control signal when the amount of energy supplied reaches a predetermined level. The control signal terminates the application of the supply to the load. As shown, a filament lamp 10 in series with a switching transistor 13 is connected to a supply terminal 12. The supply voltage is fed to a function generator circuit 17 which produces an output approximating the square of the value of the supply voltage and which may comprise a network of resistors and Zener diodes, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The squared voltage signal is fed to an integrator circuit 18 connected to one input of a differential amplifier 22 which changes its output level when the integrator output reaches a reference level set by a potentiometer 23. At this point, the transistor 13 is turned off and is only energized again when a pulse from a clock source 15 closes a switch 21 so as to begin a new integrating cycle. The system operates to maintain a constant lamp brightness. The function generator 17 may include an additional Zener diode which breaks down and causes transistor 13 to turn off if high voltage transients appear at terminal 12. The system may be used to control the brightness of an array of lamps in a display by a multiplexing procedure, Fig. 2 (not shown).
