Abstract

1462261 Bearings ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS Ltd 31 Dec 1974 [16 May 1974] 21875/74 Heading F2A A journal bearing, e.g. a big end bearing of a connecting rod, having two complementary parts 11, 12 held together by connecting bolts, 14 and providing an internal cylindrical surface with two replaceable bearing shells 13 located on the cylindrical surface, has recesses 18 formed on the external surfaces of the shells which cooperate with the connecting bolts to prevent axial or radially movement of the shells. The bearing may be made by bolting the two parts together and machining the cylindrical surface so that the envelopes of the surface and bolt holes overlap, removing the bolts, inserting shells on which recesses of appropriate depth have been formed, and bolting the parts together around the shaft to be supported. The bolts used in the finished bearing may be those used during machining but rotated through 180 degrees so as to engage the recesses in the shells. The bolts may be provided with serrated portions 20 which engage with the parts to accurately locate the bolts, or alternatively the head of the bolts may have flats which engage with complementary shapes in the parts.
