Abstract

1462182 Respiratory appliances E CARDEN 12 March 1974 16120/73 Heading A5T An apparatus, for use in continuous positive pressure breathing techniques with infants comprises a tubular body 10 with an air-passage 11 therethrough, the latter having a throat 12 and an outlet 13 connected to an adapter 14 for an endotracheal tube 16, an inlet 23 for fresh gas aligned with the throat and openings 24, formed in a friction-fit end cap 20 and arranged in a circular array around the inlet to permit exhaled gas and excess fresh gas to escape from the body. A nipple 17 connected to the outlet side of the throat is provided for the connection of a gauge for measuring pressure at the end of expiration. The dimensions of the throat are such that at a fresh gas-flow rate of 5-10 litres/ min., the pressure at the end of expiration in the patient's airway is in the range of 5-10 cms of water. In another embodiment, (Figs. 5, 6 not shown) the inlet nipple extends radially of the body and communicates with a septum extending across the air passage within the body, the septum having a central axial inlet and the circular array of openings for exhaled gas and excess fresh gas. The end of the body remote from the outlet can be used for connecting the body to a mechanical respirator for assisted respiration.
