Abstract

1462091 Catalytic converter for I.C. engines U O P INC 10 April 1974 [11 April 1973] 15819/74 Heading B1F A catalytic converter for I.C. engine exhaust gases comprises a metal housing having a tubular central portion 12 and containing a ceramic monolithic element 24 having axially aligned flow passages and having its periphery surrounded by a wrapping 34 of compressible, resilient material which is maintained in a partially compressed state by a surround metal liner member 36 positioned to space the wrapper from the housing wall. The liner member suitably has overlapping edges 36' so that it can be compressed to compress the wrapper for insertion of the wrapped monolith into the housing, the liner then being released to the partially compressed state. The wrapper may be a ceramic wool blanket resistant to a temperature of at least 1500‹F and having an uncompressed density of about 8 pounds/sq ft on a metal wire mesh. Flat annular end members 40 may be provided to seat the monolith in the housing or the housing may itself have inward projections to provide the seats (Figs. 5 and 6 not shown). The monolith has a catalyst 28 deposited on its channel surfaces and its outer periphery may be coated 32 with an aluminium silicate cement as a seal. Suitably the compression of the wrapping is such that it exhibits 75-80% of its original thickness and provides a pressure on the monolith and housing of 2-4 psi.
