1462072 Cutting webs and stacking sheets E A TIMSON 11 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974 26 March 1974] 06255/74 and 13263/74 Heading B8R A web W, Figs. 1 and 2, is slit into strips R1, R2 by slitter rolls 22 and the strips are cut into sheets by rotary cutters 26, 27, the pairs of sheets being conveyed by belts 13, 21 so as to be stacked in batches on belts 17 against stops S. When the stops S are moved to release the batches, the latter are advanced by belts 17, 21 on to hinged guide flaps 33, 34, Figs. 2 and 3, and against front stops 35, 36. The flaps are then swung to vertical position to combine the batches B into a vertically oriented stack P on a conveyer 37 which, when the stops 35, 36 releases the stack, carries it to a further operating station. Top and bottom covers may be fed laterally on to the flaps before the batches are received, or a single cover comprising top and bottom parts and a spine is fed laterally on to the flaps and conveyer 37. The web may be replaced by a plurality of superposed webs, so that each cut item is a plurality of sheets. In another form, Fig. 4, the flaps 33<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP> are initially inclined in V-form, having horizontal flanges 33b, whereby the batches B and covers are tilted into the V and rest on the conveyer 37 when the flaps are moved to vertical position about hinges 39.
