Abstract

1461944 Scanning reactor cores UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 28 Feb 1975 [12 March 1974] 10987/74 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor comprises a nuclear reactor core submerged in a pool of coolant contained within a vessel and ultrasonic means for scanning the core, the ultrasonic means comprising a waveguide penetrating the cover of the vessel and extending into the pool of the coolant, wave generation and detection means disposed at the end of the wave guide outside the vessel, a mirror for reflecting the waves diposed at the submerged end of the vessel, and means remotely operable from outside the vessel for pivoting the mirror about an axis normal to the longitudinal axis of the waveguide, the means comprising a resilient member for biasing the mirror towards one extreme operable position and fluid pressure means for pivoting the mirror towards the opposed extreme operable position against the bias of the resilient member. The biasing member may be a helical coil compression spring and the fluid pressure means may be a flexible bellows expansible by gas pressure.
