Abstract

1461737 Assembling upholstery springs SPUHL AG 18 March 1975 [19 March 1974] 11140/75 Heading A4M A machine, for assembling mattress springs so as to be capable of producing mattresses of half normal width, comprises at both the upper and lower ends of the mattress springs 1, 1', 1" a plurality of pairs of clamping jaws 2, 3, 2', 3', 2", 3" arranged in a row to hold end turns of adjacent spring and to allow passage of a helical connecting wire 6, a pair of knife pairs 7 8 disposed between the central pairs of jaws 2', 3 and 2", 3", the knife pairs serving to sever the helical wire 6 at two places to form a wire remainder 6b, means for forming the severed ends into an eye, and a collecting tube 15 to receive the severed remainder, the tube 15 being pivotably mounted, at 17, for movement through 90 degrees from a receiving position in which it is aligned with the helical wire 6 to a discharge position, shown in broken line in Fig. 4. A holder 9 carries a fixed knife 7 and a movable knife 8 which is displaced by a two armed lever 13 in turn displaced by a lever 12a or 12b driven by a pneumatic piston 11a, 11b and cylinder 10a, 10b. A part of the movable knife 8 and a part of the jaw 3' or 3" co-operate to form the severed ends into eyes. The collecting tube is pivoted, at 17, on a tubular carrier 16 and is pivoted by a reciprocatable rod 19 carrying a wire member 20 which retains the severed remainder 6b in the tube 15. To discharge the severed remainder 6b the carrier 16 and tube 15 are pivoted, at 26, by a spring-biased reciprocating mechanism 27-29 to a position in which one end is aligned with the discharge nozzle 31 of a compressed air tube 30. The compressed air blows the severed remainder 6b through the carrier 16 and into an aligned catching tube 33.
