Abstract

1461693 Mounting opto - semiconductor devices MARCONI CO Ltd 19 March 1974 [15 Jan 1974] 01920/74 Heading H1K [Also in Divisions G1 and G2] A photosensitive and a light emissive semiconductor device are positioned on a carrier which mates with a body member housing a branched light guide so that the devices and the ends of the light guide branches are accurately juxtaposed. A contact pattern (10) is silk screened on to an alumina substrate (12) and a LED and a photodiode are bonded to appropriate pads (14, 16) and connected to other tracks (11, 17) by filaments. The substrate is located in a recess 30 in a housing 22 which is moulded round an optical fibre bundle 24 which is branched into two arms 26, 28 terminating above the devices. The housing is provided with a boss 36 to interrupt the direct light path between the LED and the photodiode. The devices are positioned on the substrate relative to two adjacent reference edges which are located against corresponding reference edges of the recess. The substrate is secured by a transparent adhesive or encapsulant and bores 34 are provided to enable the housing to be secured to a base-plate (not shown) to provide a light-tight enclosure for the devices. Instead of a bundle of fibres a single forked optical fibre may be used. The arrangement is intended for use in a light pen for reading strip codes.
