1461544 Ink ribbon mechanisms INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES UORP 13 May 1975 [13 July 1974] 20008/75 Heading B6F Ink ribbon mechanism includes an epicyclic planetary mechanism on each spool shaft and an automatic ribbon reversing mechanism, triggered by bars on the ribbon. Each epicyclic mechanism comprises a sun wheel formed by a plastics track 42, 42<SP>1</SP> on a shoulder 41, 41<SP>1</SP> of gear wheel 38, 39, planet wheels 43, 43<SP>1</SP> and a concentric ring 44, 441 whose teeth 56, 56<SP>1</SP> can be engaged by a pawl 55. A motor (26), Fig. 3 (not shown) drives shaft 36 in direction A whilst the engagement of gears 38, 39 rotates gear 39 in direction B. As shown pawl 55 engages teeth 56 to prevent ring 44 rotating in the opposite direction to A thus causing the planet carrier of wheels 43 to rotate in direction A and drive its associated spool. Simultaneously ring 44<SP>1</SP> is free to rotate and the planet carrier of wheels 43<SP>1</SP> is therefore not driven, but the friction forces generated provide a drag on its spool to tension the ribbon. Over-centre bias on the pawl 55 and plate 58 are provided by springs 85, 87 respectively. Interposers 65, 66 are pivoted at 67, 68 on the plate 58. With pawl 55 engaging ring 44 the ribbon moves in direction 18. As the ribbon is exhausted bar 27 will move lever 30 from position 77 to 78 so that interposer 66 is in path of projections 74, 75, one of which will abut it and move it into its other over centre position. The interposers simultaneously move the pawl 55 into its opposite position to engage ring 44<SP>1</SP> and reverse the ribbon drive.
