Abstract

1461473 Solution mining AKZONA INC 10 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 01143/74 Heading E1F As a first step in the solution mining of an hydraulically fracturable bedded rock salt deposit including a geologic anomaly 16 that prevents extension of hydraulic fracturing in the deposit a communicating passage is established between two or more boreholes 10, 12 intersecting the deposit by hydraulic fracturing the deposit from one borehole as far as the anomaly and solution mining from another of the boreholes through the deposit and then the anomaly until the fractured deposit is reached, to permit of normal solution mining techniques to then be applied to the deposit. The solvent liquid is delivered to the deposit through a guidable nozzle 30 of a flexible hose 25 that is advanced down through and out of the borehole 10. Guidance of the nozzle may be caused by either selectively closing ports in the wall of the nozzle, or by providing the. nozzle with electronically operated guidance mechanism that causes the nozzle to home onto a target device at the lower end of the first borehole. The nozzle can filled with a directional and inclination-recording device that allows of remote monitoring of the movement of the nozzle. The hose can be provided with buoyancy collars 26, 28, the buoyancy of which can be varied to allow of controlled directing of the nozzle. As the solution-mined part of the passageway being formed in the deposit between boreholes is formed a solution insulating pad can be formed at the ceiling of the passage part by adding to the solvent fluid passing through. the nozzle a fluid of lower specific gravity than that of the solvent fluid. The nozzle can be caused to advance by toothed wheels mounted on fins on the outside of the nozzle, which is slotted so that some of the teeth of the wheels project into the fluid flowing through the nozzle so that the wheels will be driven by the fluid to propel the nozzle forwards.
