1461449 Load responsive valves KNORRBREMSE GmbH 4 March 1974 [2 March 1973] 9690/74 Heading F2F In a load responsive valve assembly having a load responsive diaphragm-type piston 4, 12 with a pressure control chamber 13, a valve seal 19 is carried by an element 24 and is co-operable with an inlet valve seat 18, controlling flow from a pressure source to the chamber, and an outlet valve seat 17, controlling flow from the chamber to an outlet 30, the element being controlled by operating means 16 responsive to piston movement, wherein the valve seal is compressible by the seats through a discrete distance, e.g. of 10% of the predetermined maximum stroke of the operating means. Vehicle load changes are transmitted through a plate 5 to a deformable plate 8 or an hydraulic cell which transmits a portion of the load to a piston 11 which in turn acts on the piston 12. If vehicle loading is balanced at a particular control pressure, the seal 19 engages both seats 17, 18. If a load decrease occurs, the spring biased operating means 16 follows downward piston movement to open the chamber 13 to the outlet 30; conversely, upon load increase, upward operating means movement opens the chamber 13 to an inlet 23 from a pressure source. The compressibility of the seal 19 avoids spurious valve opening due to transient shocks &c. The operating fluid may be air or other gases or liquids.
