Abstract

1461373 Anionic diene polymerization BAYER AG 4 March 1975 [7 March 1974] 8886/75 Heading C3P Conjugated dienes are polymerized, optionally together with vinylaromatic compounds, in solution in the presence of the reaction product of (1) an organolithium, -sodium, or -potassium compound and (2) an amine of the formula wherein R is hydrocarbyl, two of the R<SP>1</SP> represent R and the other two represent hydrogen, and n is 1 to 20, or an amine which is 1,5-bismethylaminonaphthalene or N,N<SP>1</SP>-diethylene diamine, in a ratio of (1) to (2) of 2 : 1. Block copolymers may be formed. The polymerization may be terminated with alkylene oxides to give reactive alcoholic end groups. The usual tertiary amine and ether additives may also be present during the polymerization. Products with a very wide range of molecular weights (1000 to 28,600) and stereostructure (9À7 to 90À8% 1, 2; 0 to 43À9% cis 1,4 and 9À2 to 51À2 trans 1,4) are obtained in the examples, which refer to the polymerization of butadiene, butadiene/styrene mixtures, butadiene followed by styrene to form block copolymers and a small amount of styrene followed by butadiene or isoprene, in the presence of a toluene or benzene solvent and a catalyst comprising (1) n-C 4 H 9 Li or a K/naphthalene reaction product, and (2) butylamine, 2-ethylhexylamine, cyclohexylamine, aniline, N,N-diethyl or N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethylethylenediamine, N,N<SP>1</SP> - diphenyl ethylene diamine, bis(2 - methylaminoethyl)methylamine) or 1,5-bis(methylamino)naphthalene. Tetrahydrofuran or triethylamine are also present in many examples, while the polymerizations are mostly terminated with ethylene oxide.
