1461201 Optical tachometer PLESSEY CO Ltd 26 Feb 1975 [18 March 1974] 11832/74 Heading G1A An optical tachometer comprises a disc 5 having windows 6 equally spaced in a ring with on opposite sides light source 1 and coaxial and relatively rotatable disc 7 having an equal number of windows 8 spaced in a ring and detector 2 receiving light from all windows simultaneously. Light from source 1 falls uniformly on windows 6. All windows 6 and 8 coincide simultaneously so that lens 9 concentrates light from all windows on detector 2, which, via terminals 3 and 4, operates a counter, indicator or a shaft speed control. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the second disc has reflectors instead of windows, and an annular source and the detector are on the same side of the discs. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, for gramophone turn-tables, the discs, one of which rotates, are annuli 5, 7 levelled at 11 and separated by opaque screen 16. Windows are formed between black ink on transparent plastic ribbon 12. Light from a number of sources 1 travels by total internal reflection as shown by lines 13, 14 to photo-cells 2, whose output is combined, maybe in series.
