Abstract

1460984 Optical glass CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 30 July 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 33633/74 Heading C1M A glass suitable for use as a remote portion lens in a multifocal glass system, and which may be phototropic, comprises, in percent by weight the balance, if any, consisting of one or more compatible constituents, the halogen and refining agent content, if any, being considered as additional to the 100% total of the other constituents, and the weight ratio SiO 2 : B 2 O 3 being 0À64-0À8 : 1. In making a phototropic glass, a batch comprising silver and halogen components is, after melt fusion, heat-treated at 550-675‹ C. for a time sufficient to develop silver halide discontinuities. Such a glass, which may have a refractive index n D of 1À52- 1-535 and a thermal expansion coefficient of 49- 55 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/deg. C., may be heat-fused to a near portion glass in making a multifocal lens, the near portion glass being of similar expansion coefficient and refractive index at least 1À60. Examples of near portion glasses are given. The glass of the invention may be strengthened by treatment with molten NaNO 3 for 16 hours at 465‹ C.
