Abstract

1460898 Delta pulse code modulation GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 7 May 1974 [7 May 1973] 21540/73 Heading H3H In delta pulse code modulation, the reference voltages 20 used in threshold circuits 16-19 of the A-D converter and in the D-A converter 29 are controlled in dependence on the time-average of the amplitude level of the difference signal to give an overall companding characteristic. As shown, the most significant bit of the digital difference signal is stepped through a four stage register 36, AND gate 37 giving an output only when the last four samples are "1"s, integrated at 38 and applied to control the references 20. The time constant of integrator 38 is comparable to the syllabic periods of the input (speech) signal. A receiver, Fig. 2 (not shown), is similar but the loop is open.
