Abstract

1460437 Measuring fluid-flow GEORGE KENT Ltd 20 June 1974 [3 May 1973] 21046/73 Heading G1R [Also in Division F2] In a fluid-flow meter, fluid enters through an inlet 16 one or other of chambers 6, 8 through a valve 20 to expand one chamber 6, 8 and exhaust the other of chambers 8, 6 through conduits 22, 22' annular channels 24, 24', radial ports 26, 26' and outlet 18. The arrangement is such that as piston/diaphragm assemblies 10, 12, joined by a coupling 14, are moved, means is actuated at the end of the stroke to reverse the valve 20 thus allowing the flow to enter the chamber 8, 6 that has been exhausted and allow fluid to leave the chamber 6, 8 that has been filled. The coupling 14 is provided with a cylindrical rack 40 which rotates a pair of drive pinions 42, 44 on an assembly 70 Fig. 2 which through uni-directional clutches, Fig. 3 (not shown), drive one or the other of gears 62, 62' to drive a gear 64 which, through a shaft 66, rotates a magnet assembly 68. The assembly 70 is mounted within the meter body with the magnet assembly 68 located below a plate 35 and the end of shaft 66 located by a bearing 35a. The magnet assembly 65 drives a flow recording unit in a housing 28. Torsion springs 82, 82' resiliently bias the pinions inwardly against the rack 40. The means for operating the valve 20 comprises pins 132 on the rack 40 engaging the sides of a lever 118 Figs. 4, 5, to actuate, through a spring 116, a slave lever 112 which abuts one or the other of pins 110 on a slider 102 to snap the slider 102 from one position to the other so abutting a stop 130 on a valve plate 90 to move a valve pad 100 from one fluid passage opening position to the other thus permitting fluid to pass through inlet 16 to channel 22 or 22' to one or other of the chambers 8 or 6. The rack 40 may be replaced by a screw-threaded rod, a flat double sided rack, a pair of opposed gear racks, or a pair of levers driven directly by the assemblies 10, 12 and arranged to rotate a drive-shaft through unidirectional clutches (all not shown).
