Abstract

1460400 Diaphragm for alkali metal halide electrolysis MARUZEN OIL CO Ltd 8 Jan 1975 [11 Jan 1974 21 Oct 1974] 750/75 Heading C7B Alkali metal halide solutions are electrolysed in a cell having a diaphragm of a cation exchange resin which comprises an ethylenic hydrocarbon polymer backbone on to which is grafted a side chain derived predominantly from mono- or dihydroxystyrene. The polymer may additionally be sulphonated and/or cross-linked. Grafting is effected by irradiation of the base polymer with α-, γ-, or x-rays or electrons, during or after which it is contacted with the styrene compound or an equivalent acyloxystyrene and in the latter case is then hydrolysed. From 5-500 wt per cent, based on the backbone polymer, of grafting monomer may be added. Specified backbone polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, polystyrene and its methyl and butyl derivatives, and polyvinyl cyclohexane. Cross-linking agents listed are difunctional compounds reactive with phenolic OH groups (e.g. diepoxides, diisocyanates and acid dihalides); polyenes (e.g. divinylbenzenes); and organic sulphonic acids. Conventional sulphonation procedures are used to add 0.5-2 sulphonic groups per hydroxystyrene unit. The grafting and cross-linking reactions may be effected simultaneously. The polymer may be treated in film form or prior to film formation. Specified electrolysis conditions are; ferrous cathode; graphite or dimensionally stable anode; temperature 0-90‹C; a c.d. of 5-30 A/dm<SP>2</SP>; and the optional use of multicompartment cells involving non-selective (e.g. fluorine resin) membranes in addition to the ion-exchange membrane.
