Abstract

1460293 Production of liquid conjugated diene polymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 21 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972 9 March 1973] 24377/76 Divided out of 1460040 Heading C3P A conjugated diene or mixture thereof with a vinyl aromatic compound is polymerized or oligomerized in the presence of ethylene and/or propylene and of a catalyst comprising (i) an organic compound of nickel, i.e. a carboxylate, carbonyl, complex or #-bonded compound thereof, (ii) an organoaluminium halide of the formula R n AlX 3-n where R is alkyl, aralkyl or phenyl, X is halogen and n is 1 to 2, and (iii) a phosphorus compound, i.e. a phosphine, phosphite, phosphate, phosphonium compound, a compound PX 3 or POX 3 where X is Cl, Br or I, hexamethyl phosphorous triamide, or hexamethylphosphoric triamide. The examples refer to the polymerization of isoprene or 1,3-pentadiene, in benzene or toluene as solvent, in the presence of propylene and of catalysts comprising (i) nickel stearate or naphthenate, (ii) ethylaluminium sesquichloride, and (iii) triphenyl phosphine or phosphite.
