Abstract

1460021 Switch contacts; retractive switches GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 17 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 3636/73 Heading H1N An electric switch comprises a helical metal wire spring 10 movable to bridge fixed contacts 34, whereafter further movement of the spring 10 causes it to wind or unwind to effect relative movement between adjacent turns to provide a wiping action between spring 10 and contacts 34. Spring 10 rests on peg 12 projecting from actuator 14 operated by pushbutton 24 and has tangential end portions 16 engaging in recesses 18 against shoulders 17 on actuator 14 such that the helical portion of spring 10 rests on top of peg 12, depression of pushbutton 24 moving spring 10 into engagement with contacts 34 and further depression causing the helical portion of spring 10 to rise off peg 12 and ends 16 of spring 10 to straighten against shoulders 17 to stress spring 10 to cause adjacent turns to slide relative to each other, until stop 36 projecting from actuator 14 behind spring 10 engages base 26. Spring 10 is of gold plated phosphor bronze wire and contacts 34 are gold plated copper staples with their ends driven through printed circuit board 26 and soldered on the underside 40 to printed circuit connections. Projection 28 on actuator 14 slides in hole 30 in board 26 and carries retractive spring 32. A plurality of switches may be mounted on board 26 and interconnected to form a matrix, Fig. 4 (not shown), e.g. for a telephone switchboard.
