Abstract

1459915 Altering physical or molecular Structure SANDVIK AB 7 June 1974 [8 June 1973] 25488/74 Heading B3V [Also in Division C7] A high strength stainless chromium-nickel steel containing 0À01-0À20 C, 13-20 Cr, 3-10 Ni, 0-2À5 Al, 0-10 Mn, 0-2À5 Mo, 0-5 Si the balance being iron and compatible impurities is heat treated at 950-1100‹ C. to stabilize the austenite. After rapid quenching, the steel, in wire or strip form is cold reduced 40-90% (preferably 60-85%) to transform the majority of the austenite to mortensite, and tempered at 200-550‹ C. (preferably 250-450‹ C.) prior to further cold working 5-40% (preferably 10-30%) and further tempering at 300-550‹ C. (preferably 350-500‹ C.). The resulting material has improved tensile strength and durability and better elevated temperature properties than similar materials strengthened by cold working alone after quenching from the austenizing heat treatment temperature. The materials are said to be suitable for spring applications.
