Abstract

1459555 Sealing pipelines STADTWERKE EMDEN GmbH 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43767/74 Heading F2P Domestic gas supply pipes are internally sealed along their length by foaming a sealant liquid and forcing it into the pipes. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the sealant liquid 2 containing a foaming agent is forced by carbon dioxide or ammonia gas from cylinder 9 into riser pipe 14. The gas in the pipeline may be used instead for this purpose. The sealant foam is forced up riser pipe 14 and along branch pipe 15, leading to other riser pipes, to gas cookers 19 and other appliances 20 via stop cocks 17; meters 18 being isolated. When the entire domestic supply pipe system has been filled with foam the outlets are shut off and the system placed under overpressure by the foam generator before purging the system with the gas supply from mains pipe 10. Purging may alternatively be carried out using a gas different from that used in the foaming or by spraying alcohols, e.g. methanol into the pipe. Organic aqueous dispersions of polyvinyl acetate or poly-isobutylene (50-60% concentration) or inorganic aqueous dispersions of Portland cement may be used with the addition of foaming agents. The pipes to be sealed may be metallic or non-metallic, e.g. earthenware, concrete or asbestos.
