Abstract

1459344 Removing solvent from elastomers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 28798/74 Heading C3P A process for removing a C 6 -C 7 hydrocarbon solvent from an elastomer composition comprises mixing a pentane with the composition after polymerization and prior to evaporation in a devolatilization zone under such conditions of temperature and pressure, that the solvent evaporates. Evaporation may be effected for example, in a flash chamber or devolatilizing extruder. The solvent removed may comprise cyclohexane, benzene and/or toluene, or a mixture of cyclohexane and isopentane. The elastomer composition may be a cement, from which a major proportion of the solvent may be flashed, after which the pentane is added, and further devolatilization effected in an extruder. Suitable pentanes are n-pentane and isopentane. Elastomers specified are butadiene polymers.
