Abstract

1459209 Contact unit R POESCHL 18 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972 2 July 1973] 58499/73 Heading D2A A contact unit for use in a dewatering device in a papermaking machine comprises a channel-shaped member 2 supporting segments 1 arranged side-by-side, the upper surfaces of which are free and located in a common plane and are made of a material having a hardness greater than 6 on the Moh scale, the segments being adhesively bonded to the channel-shaped member. Preferably, the segments consist substantially entirely of the hard material which may be sintered aluminium oxide or silicon carbide. The segments may be bonded to the channel-shaped member by means of an epoxy resin bonding composition which may include fillers, fibres, wires, or fabrics. Bonding may be assisted by providing the segments with at least one rib which, in use, projects downwardly into the channel-shaped member, (Figs. 2-10, 14-18 not shown). Alternatively, at least one longitudinal groove, preferably of trapezoidal cross-section, may be provided on the undersides of the segments (Figs 11, 12, 19, 20, not shown); or, a longitudinally extending metal bar may be arranged between the segments and the base of the channel-shaped member (Figs. 11, 22, not shown). In the latter case, the bar may be hollow in order that a coolant liquid may be circulated therethrough (Figs. 19, 20 not shown). The channelshaped member may have different crosssections, (Figs. 4-7, not shown). The leading ediges of the segments may be Sharp, (Figs. 8-11, 18-22, not shown). The contact unit may be inserted into carrier body 16 so that the upper surfaces of the segments are either above the surface of the carrier body, as shown, or flush with it, (Fig. 14 not shown). The carries body may be provided with grooves 25 and suction holes 26 for dewatering, as shown, or may be formed with slots, (Figs. 23-26, not shown). The carrier body may be provided with channel-shaped guides e.g. of extruded aluminium for reception of the contact units, each guide having a slot cooperating with a boss located on the channelshaped member 2, (Fig. 25, not shown). The contact unit may be held in the carrier body by means of a vacuum acting through the body underneath the unit, (Fig. 16, not shown).
