Abstract

1459183 Road surface cutting machines NON-IMPACT SURFACES Ltd 10 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 59513/72 Heading E1G Apparatus for machining a road surface comprising a cutting drum 19 rotatable about an axis transverse to the direction of travel of the apparatus and movable to cut away a variable depth of the road is characterized in that it is provided with a first hydrostatic pump and motor combination for driving the drum, a second hydrostatic pump and motor combination for driving at least one of the road wheels of the apparatus and means for varying the infinitely variable displacements of the pumps individually whereby any combination of drum and road wheel speeds may be provided. The motors are connected to the chassis 10 by a pivoted cradle [40] to accommodate the camber of the road and the drum is raised or lowered by a ram 43; the depth of cut being determined by vertically adjustable rollers 45. The apparatus also includes a burner assembly 18, 85 which is vertically adjustable relative to the road by a ram 60 acting on wires 83, 84. The pumps [62, 71] used are of the swash plate type and the pump [71] in the cutter circuit is less powerful than the pump [62] in the wheel driving circuit. The control valves [64, 65, 67, 81, 74] of the circuit, see Fig. 6 (not shown), are all simultaneously controlled by a ram [68] connected to a further hydraulic pump [80] via a control valve [69]; an additional valve [78] being provided to connect to-gether the input and output lines to the motors [21, 22] to allow the vehicle to be towed. Each roller 45 is controlled by a ram [90], see Fig. 7 (not shown), the ram of each roller being jointly connected to a pump [91] and each provided with a reversing valve [93] having two solenoids [95, 96] automatically controlled by microswitches attached to the wheel mountings.
