Abstract
1459126 Welding by pressure CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 3 Feb 1975 [9 March 1974] 10648/74 Heading B3R [Also in Division G3] The fluid pressure in the output side of a control valve is measured and compared with a reference which is adjustable simultaneously with that for an operating parameter for the valve. Friction welding apparatus is hydraulically operated, the hydraulic pressure being varied by an electromagnetic valve controlled by a programmer so as to vary with time as shown. Potentiometers coupled in pairs set the various-pressures and their associated duration. The output of the pressure comparator gives an alarm if the pressure is incorrect for a period such as P1 commencing a prescribed time after the pressure is commanded. The apparatus is described in block diagram form only (Fig. 2, not shown). The "operating parameter" may alternatively be "burn" off distance in a friction welder. Other uses, e.g. plastics injection moulding are mentioned.
