1459023 Fireballs for solid-fuel grates A W G ABERNETHY 25 Feb 1975 [17 April 1974] 16780/74 Heading F4W A solid fuel fired heating unit comprises a rotatable riddle 11 having apertures 11A and a bed of fire-resistant spheres or pseudo-spheres 13 supported on the riddle to support in turn the solid fuel. The spheres or pseudo-spheres 13 are made of fireclay, asbestos compounds, iron, wear-resistant iron such as Ni-hard i.e. alloys of iron with 4-5 % nickel; 1À5% chromium; silicon and carbon, or heat-resistant iron such as Niresist i.e. alloys of iron with 12-15% nickel, 5-7% copper and 1À5-4% chromium. When used in multiple layers, the spheres or pseudospheres may be provided with grooves and/or holes in their surfaces. The riddle is supported by a spider 14 and has teeth 11C which mesh with a toothed wheel 15 on a shaft 16 which is operable manually or by an electric motor controlled by a time switch. Alternatively, a rod has a protrusion at right angles to its longitudinal axis which engages a notch on the underside of the perimeter of the riddle.
