Abstract

1458607 Scale removal BORG WARNER CORP 14 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49344/74 Heading C7E [Also in Division E1] A composition for removing scale from oil-well bores and associated equipment comprises an aqueous solution containing # 5 wt per cent of an amino polycarboxylic acid or an ammonium, amine, or alkali metal salt thereof and # 1 wt per cent of an ammonium, amine or alkali metal borate, tetraborate or metaborate, and has pH>8. The acid may be EDTA or nitrilotriacetic acid, e.g. in amount 5-12%, the borate may be 1-5% of borax. The composition optionally contains a surfactant, e.g. an alkanolamide or ethoxylated phenol, or a freezing-point depressant, e.g. ethylene glycol; the pH is adjusted with NH 4 OH or alkali metal oxide or hydroxide. In use, an oil-well may be flushed with kerosene, then the production tubing is filled with the composition, optionally capped by kerosene, left for 24 hours and then the well put back into production. A fluid-friction reducing compound may be added to the composition, e.g. polyacrylonitrile or polyethylene oxide.
