1458549 Apparatus for measuring the angle of rotation of a shaft U K INTERNATIONAL AS 24 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 23418/74 Headings G1A and G1N Apparatus for measuring angular rotation of a member comprises a shaft 1 connectable to the member, a closed loop, as 17, bearing, as a signal, a number of cycles of a waveform, being moved along a closed path such that the distance moved is proportional to the angle of rotation of shaft 1 and having adjacent a sensing means 20 giving a signal proportional to the magnitude of the portion of the waveform adjacent to it to a circuit 10, 11, 12, 13, for producing a pulse whenever the waveform amplitude exceeds a certain value. In one embodiment Fig. 1 (not shown), shaft 1 carries a perpendicular and coaxial circular disc (5) of diameter 70mm with one face coated with magnetic material on which 500 cycles of sinusoidal waveforms are recorded. The sensing head (6), 0À05mm from this, consists of polepieces which place the magnetic field perpendicular to a wall generator by means of an air-gap (6') of 0À1mm. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, translucent film 17 runs between discs 14 and 15, the former having teeth meshing with perforations of film 17, whose tension is mantained by spring-loaded roller 18. Circuit 13 is a Schmitt trigger, which gives a square pulse when the signal exceeds a certain value, and feeds an electronic counter 21 and a display, which could indicate quantity of petrol supplied and its price. The angular velocity of the shaft and hence the rate of flow may be measured by counting pulses in unit time.
